Townsville Eye Newspaper Couture Challenge

Most people choose to read newspaper, but some decide to wear it. Innovative designers turned Townsville Bulletin newspapers into couture runway designs. Each lucky entrant received a free entry into the CMMBTFF 2014 Designer Runway.

See the talented designers below who unveiled their creations on Sunday 27 October.

With love, Tania Clarke, the TFF team.

Making of a Fashion Festival - Suzanne Pilcher

Ever wondered who is the resident social media maven? One stylish lady works around the clock to ensure the Townsville Fashion Festival is posting all the right words and images.

Jumping from laptop, to iPhone to iPad, Suzie has all the right gadgets and skills to get the job done with speed and efficiency. Between attending university, working two jobs and running the social media channels for the fashion festival, being super organised is a must.

We get a glimpse behind the scenes of this busy girl's life...

Fashion industry experience:

I don't have a huge amount of fashion experience but have worked in retail for a couple of years and volunteered for TFF since early last year.

Favourite designer:

I love Australian labels, Shakuhachi and Finders Keepers, although they are generally a little out of my uni-student price range.

Style staple:

A nice black skirt and statement necklace never goes awry.

Why you live in Townsville:

I grew up in Townsville, but I love living here. Our tropical and relaxed lifestyle and being minutes from the beach is awesome. I'm really keen to see Townsville prosper with creative and progressive events like TFF because we live in such a beautiful part of the world - it could easily be a tropical paradise with an urban edge to it.

2013 TFF Event I’m most looking forward to:

Well I’m obviously excited for the whole weekend, but I’m really looking forward to the Cocktail Couture event on Thursday night – it’s going to deliver some breathtaking stuff.

With love, Tania Clarke, the TFF team.

Making of a Fashion Festival - Caroline Bottrill

With the nature of volunteer work, it is essential our committee members wear a number of hats. Caroline Bottrill is the trendy lady behind the designer, event coordinator and sponsorship team. Having a passion for the region to prosper drives Caroline to help mould the fashion festival into a memorable experience for all.

Her positive nature and wisdom is the attitude that makes a community event thrive. See what makes her tick...

Fashion industry experience:

Wayne Cooper internationally, but growing to love lots of local designers and I am becoming exposed. I love Peta C and my daughter loves Make Amend and Miss Elsie's Wardrobe.

Why you live in Townsville:

We moved to Townsville initially for my husbands work but we have grown to love the region. We have amazing friends and our kids are fortunate to be at a great school and involved in many sports, which keeps us extremely busy. We love Sundays on the river enjoying water sports. The lifestyle really suits our family and I love it when friends and family from South come to visit and leave jealous of our lifestyles here in North Queensland.

2013 TFF Event I'm most looking forward to:

I can't really choose, I'm excited to see the amazing creations the hair and make up teams are putting together, can't wait to see the designers I am getting to know display their garments on the Friday night. I'm looking forward to bringing my family down to the Sunday Al Fresco Fashion on Flinders event.

With love, the TFF team.

Making of a Fashion Festival - Cindy Walker

Behind the fashion, style and photography of a fashion festival, a passionate hair stylist is hard at work.  Cindy Walker is renown in her industry not only for her drive towards her own business, Ave Hair, but her passion for hair dressing as a profession. Working backstage at prestigious events is no match to working along side a passionate team of Townsville Hairdressers.

Providing the wisdom and creativity for the TFF Hair Team, Cindy wears a number of hats. She steered the vision for the Face of Townsville Fashion Festival shoot by harnessing her perfectionist nature to create a high quality and elegant look.

Cindy's experience and innovation is a valuable asset to the TFF team.

Your role on the Townsville Fashion Festival committee:

Board member, I do whatever needs to be done.

Fashion industry experience:

26 Years in Hairdressing. Assisting backstage for Antoniette Beenders, Tracey Hughs, Oscar & Oscar. But the best experience that I have really enjoyed has got to be working with the Townsville Hairdressing team, they absolutely ROCK! (I consider myself very lucky to work along side of them). I've also worked on numerous hair shows and photo shoots, which include designs.

Favourite designer:

Miss Else's Wardrobe she is my absolute saviour, Messy by Jessy and Bespoke.

Style staple:

For work, it would be any thing different and unique, and for personal wear, it would be any thing old and comfortable and sometimes I look like no one owns me but it feels great.  I love love love my friends old clothes, I don't know why, but there is always cool pieces of clothing that they get rid of.  We are such a throw away society!

Why you live in Townsville:

I live here because every one is friendly and people still say hello to each other in the street, I am the kind of person who will strike up a conversation with the person next to me in the check out line waiting to buy groceries. I find it difficult when I go down south as no one talks to each other.  It would be lonely for a lot of people down there.

2013 TFF Event I’m most looking forward to:

Seeing all the great designs and Hair on the Thursday night.  I love arty alternative styles and music. Some thing different hey!

With love, the TFF team.

New York Fashion Week Street-Style Snaps

If the creations that appear on the runway during fashion week wasn't drool worthy enough, then the street style that emerges with it steps it up a notch further.

Fashion festivals bring out the extroverts, the introverts and the boldest of bold outfits.

TFF have been scouting the internet sourcing inspiration for fashion festival outfits...we've found the coolest of cool shots for you to indulge.

Makeup Brush Guide

With a bevy of brushes on the market, it’s hard for a girl to know what the essentials are.

Unless you’re a professional makeup artist like our committee member Bec, the beauty section of the store can be a little overwhelming.

We sought out some tips from resident girl of cool, Lauren Conrad on the essential beauty arsenal.

Foundation: A synthetic brush. Can also be used for applying cream blush.

Concealer: A narrow, synthetic brush with a slightly tapered edge.

Powder: A big, soft natural-fiber brush.

Contouring: A soft brush with a flat, angled edge. Also used for bronzing.

Blush: A soft medium-full round brush. Natural fiber is best.

Eye Shadow: A tapered, flat brush that is good for blending.

Fan Brush: A light brush that is great for highlighter. It’s also good for brushing away loose eye shadow.

Eyeliner: A narrow, angled brush for applying gel liner or shadow as liner.

Eyelash and Brow Comb: The side with the small, plastic comb is used for removing mascara clumps from lashes. The bristled side is for grooming eyebrows.

Eyebrow: A firm, angled brush used for filling in eyebrows with brow powder. Go for something with coarser bristles.

Your role on the Townsville Fashion Festival committee:
All of the festival's graphic design needs ranging from logo and stationery, through to billboards and websites. As well as my creative skills, I can also bring to the table my knowledge of events through being a committee member of the Townsville Greek Festival for the past 4 years.

Fashion industry experience:
Zero before last year's Fashion Festival.

Favourite designer:
Ermenegildo Zegna... but more in my price range, Australian brand Kiss Chasey.

Style staple:
T-shirts, I can't get enough of them!

Why you live in Townsville:
I was born and bred here.

2013 TFF Event I’m most looking forward to:
All events are going to be great, but I think the 'Cocktail Couture' event on Thursday night will blow me out of the water the most.

The Making of a Fashion Festival - Bec Dainer

The TFF Committee are a bunch of local people who work tirelessly without recognition to make the Townsville Fashion Festival a success for their local community.

The team are a mix of local business people, designers, hair stylists, make up artists, event managers who are genuinely interested in the prosperity this event will provide for the economy.

The festival brings to life the North Queensland culture and talent showcasing the wonderful destination 184,000 people call home.

TFF will be showcasing the pool of volunteer talent who work behind the scenes to bring together the event. Putting a festival together is no easy feat, but when passion unites, no task is impossible.

***

Bec Dainer is one of TFF's talented makeup artists who whips up the looks for our models by painting faces, layering palettes of colour and gluing eyelashes like the professional she is backstage, without a scrap of complaint.

Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more behind the scenes peeks into the making of the Townsville Fashion Festival...

Your role on the Townsville Fashion Festival committee:
Coordinator for the Makeup Team.
Fashion industry experience:
I have been involved in various fashion parades, however they do not compare to being on the makeup team in last year’s Townsville Fashion Festival. That was the first time I had been involved in the fashion industry on such an impressive scale and with so many talented designers.
Favourite designer:
I would have to say ‘Camilla’ I adore her beautiful Kaftan’s, the prints are so vibrant, full of colour and the designs are so feminine and floaty, they are just stunning!
Style staple:
Comfort comes first for me, I am such a homebody, I prefer flats over a heel, however I do love earrings and prefer to dress up a simple outfit with a nice big pair of dangly earrings. Unless of course I had a ‘Camilla’ Kaftan in my closet, that would be a style staple on its own.
Why do you live in Townsville:
I was born here in Townsville so it’s always been home to me,  I have moved away with my family in the past but have always come back. It’s the big country...small city town, with everything I need, half my family if here, the sunshine, laid back lifestyle, cyclones and all I don’t need to live anywhere else.
2013 TFF Event I’m most looking forward to:
The opening night on Thursday 24th October is where the Hair and Makeup team get to unleash the creative, so I am really excited to show what we can do as a group that night. However I do look forward to the Runway Show on the Friday night the most, it’s a buzz being backstage and being amongst the action. There’s this high energy and constant race out back to make everything work out, yet so calm and cool on the runway, call me crazy, but I love that chaos!!

MBFWA 2013 Spring 13/14 Trends Recap

The Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Fashion Festival steamed ahead this year as a successful consumer-driven event. The unique festival directly promotes the local fashion industry by shining a spotlight on new season collections as they drop in store, rather than a season ahead.

In its eighth year, the festival is not shy of success as it launched the 13/14 Spring Summer trends.

The Spring runways were awash with fresh hues, patterns and unusual silhouettes. Reports are that 90s made an appearance in the form of midriffs and psychedelic prints. Beauty was simple with middle parts, straight shiny locks allowing the bold clothes to take centre stage.

Here were some highlights from the shows...

1. Overstated Silhouettes
Sleeves took the front seat this Spring with designers experimenting with bell shapes in luxurious fabrics.

2. Midriffs
This is one unforgiving trend that's in for a few more seasons yet. Crunch time?

3. All White
A trend that emerged months ago is still a favourite with our Aussie designers. TFF loves the crisp white tailoring seen at MBFWA.

4. Sheer Delight
Sheer sleeves, sheer panels and sheer lace popped up this season in an array and textures and hues. Still perceived as an off-limits trend by some, sheer garments require a touch of sophistication to be pulled off.

Numerous runways presented key looks reminiscent of trends from the 90s (think Kate Moss in all her glory), with exposed midriffs, psychedelic prints and exaggerated silhouettes making up the top 3 on my lust-list.
Beauty looks took on a similar 90s persuasion with middle parts, straight, shiny locks and teased accents. When it comes to hit vs miss, the following are my fashion favourites for next year’s summer season.
